Focus Prime

I have hard work ahead. Help me walk into it ready.

Right before a 90-minute deep-work block.

What success looks like

You walk to your desk centered, with one specific plan for how the first 10 minutes of work will go.

Reach for it when

  • Before deep work
  • Before writing
  • Before strategic planning
  • Before creative work
  • Before any 60-90 min focused block

The science

Pre-Work Centering + Implementation Intention

Focus Prime is a brief structured ritual for the 10 minutes before a deep-work block. It has three functional components:

1. Cue-based ritual entrainment. The same 10-minute sequence done before every deep-work block becomes a learned cue that signals "deep work starts now" to the body. Analogous to Cal Newport's "depth ritual" but with a more honest mechanism — the value is in the repetition, not in any specific neurochemistry.

2. Implementation intention (Gollwitzer 1999). The closing step rehearses ONE specific if-then plan: "When I sit down, I will start with X." This is the meta-analytically strongest psychological intervention for goal initiation we know of — Gollwitzer and Sheeran's meta-analysis across 94 studies found d ≈ 0.65 for goal attainment. The mechanism is automatized stimulus-response binding, not dopamine.

3. Brief slow-breathing parasympathetic shift. A small dose, not deep relaxation. The goal is to take the edge off pre-task anticipatory anxiety without over-shifting arousal — too much parasympathetic activation can drop arousal below the optimal zone for complex cognitive work (Yerkes-Dodson).

What this protocol does NOT do. An earlier framing claimed NSDR "primes dopamine" for deep work, citing Kjaer 2002. That claim is not earned: Kjaer's data is a single n=8 PET session in expert meditators (never replicated), the "+65% dopamine" figure is inferred from an 8% binding reduction via kinetic modeling, and Kjaer's own subjects reported a "depressed level of desire for action" — the *opposite* of "relaxed readiness." Andrew Huberman, who was sometimes invoked in support, in fact prescribes NSDR *after* learning bouts for consolidation, and brief exercise + timed caffeine *before* for arousal. Focus Prime is a centering ritual, not a neurochemical intervention. We pair well with movement and caffeine; we do not replace them.

When NOT to use this

This protocol may be the wrong tool — or need care — for:

  • Low-arousal or sleep-deprived — this is a centering ritual, not an energy intervention. If you are underslept, brief movement + caffeine + light exposure have stronger evidence. Pair Focus Prime with those, not instead of them.
  • Post-lunch / afternoon dip — that dip is metabolic and circadian (postprandial glucose, adenosine, circadian arousal trough). Use Afternoon Recharge for that.
  • Diagnosed ADHD presentations needing stimulant direction — a quiet 10-min sit may move arousal the wrong way. Talk to your clinician about pre-task protocols that fit your prescription.

This is not medical advice. If any of these describe you, talk to your clinician before integrating this protocol.
