Morning Prime

I just woke up. I want to set the day before it sets me.

First 30-60 minutes after waking, before screen contact.

What success looks like

Awake and centered baseline + clearer intent — vs. the typical "reach for phone, doomscroll, anxiety spike" morning.

Reach for it when

  • Morning anxiety
  • Underslept mornings
  • Setting daily intention
  • Before the first call

The science

Body Wake + Slow Nasal Breath + Sankalpa

Morning Prime is a short-form Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) protocol adapted for the post-waking window. It has three components, each chosen for a specific reason:

1. Body scan as a semantic-to-sensory shift. Anchoring attention in sensation (rather than thought) interrupts the default-mode rumination loop that typically dominates the first minutes after waking. This is the standard NSDR body-scan structure from Swami Satyananda's Yoga Nidra (1976), the foundation Andrew Huberman drew on when he started using the term "NSDR" on the Huberman Lab podcast.

2. Slow nasal breath at the resonance frequency. The script leads symmetric 5-in / 5-out breathing at 6 breaths per minute. This is the baroreflex resonance frequency identified by Lehrer and Vaschillo — the breathing rate that maximizes heart-rate variability (HRV) and supports balanced autonomic tone. We deliberately do *not* prescribe extended-exhale ratios (e.g. 4-in / 6-out) here, because those are more strongly parasympathetic and work against the morning goal of *oriented arousal*.

3. Sankalpa (resolve). The closing single-line intention is the traditional Yoga Nidra "resolve" from the Satyananda lineage (Bihar School of Yoga, 1964). The functional value is in rehearsing a brief "way of being" the user can return to during the day — a pattern closely related to Gollwitzer's *implementation intentions*, which have 30+ years of meta-analytic evidence supporting goal attainment.

What this protocol does NOT do. Morning Prime does *not* try to suppress or "blunt" the cortisol awakening response (CAR). A healthy CAR is adaptive (Clow et al. 2010) — it helps anticipate the day. Blunted CAR is a pathology marker in PTSD, chronic fatigue syndrome, and severe depression. The protocol shapes the natural early-morning arousal curve into *focused* alertness rather than *scattered* reactivity. It is not a sedative.

When NOT to use this

This protocol may be the wrong tool — or need care — for:

  • Major depression with blunted cortisol awakening response (CAR) — further morning cortisol suppression can worsen anergia, brain fog, and motivational deficit. Try Wind Down or Switch instead.
  • PTSD with morning hypervigilance — slow breathing and interoceptive body scan can amplify, not calm, intrusive arousal. Try Acute Reset for in-moment dysregulation; consider a clinician.
  • Panic disorder or high anxiety sensitivity — controlled breathing precipitates panic in some high-interoception users. The protocol offers a verbal opt-out near the start ("breathe normally and let my voice be company").

This is not medical advice. If any of these describe you, talk to your clinician before integrating this protocol.
